Coworker's radio played "They're Coming To Take Me Away" a few minutes ago, and now it's playing a classical piece I don't recognize. I was very confused... but it turns out to be a Halloween theme station. :-)

Later: Now it's playing Mussorgsky's "Night On Bald Mountain" again (it played it yesterday too). I wonder why it thinks that's Halloween-y? And why I haven't heard Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre" yet? I like "Danse Macabre." (I like "Night On Bald Mountain" too, but I don't have to wish for it because I'm listening to it as I type this.)

A moment later yet: hang on, this is Mannheim Steamroller that's playing "Night On Bald Mountain." Weird.

I suspect "Night on Bald Mountain" gets it's Halloween cred from the scenes from Fantasia more than from the music itself.

Ah! I haven't seen more than a couple of scenes from Fantasia.

The mountain sort of wakes up and the top turns into this guy. That sequence both bored and scared me when I was a kid...

How did it do both?

The demon guy is cool and scary, but as I recall the creatures or ghouls or whatever that he summoned are kind of boring, and it goes on forever and is paced really slowly, and then segues into a particularly dull animation to go with Ave Maria. So it's sort of "eek! eek? yawn..."

Night on Bald Mountain is Halloweeny because of the scary mountain demonish sequence in Fantasia, I think.

I wonder if they play John's Garden or In the Dark by Peter Mayer.

speaking of steamroller and Halloween
M.S did an entire set of Halloween music. I found myself befuddled and amused by their version of the X-Files theme being played during a water-aerobics class.
